Adam Sobas was born In Poland and immigrated with his family to USA in 1961. He attended University of Alabama where he studied biology for 2 years. One year in Monmouth University and then part time at Montclair State University where he studied art and photography. After taking all available sculpture courses in the undergraduate department he was allowed to take 3 Graduate sculpture courses until they found out that He did not have BA. That’s when his formal education ended and self-education began. Being human is a constant struggle between defining ourselves as individuals and trying to fit in with “the group”. Doing it my way didn’t work well in a University setting in the early 70s.

Artists such as Paul Klee, Henry Moore and writers such as Gary Zukav, Fritjof Capra and others of that time sent him on an exploration of self, his art and the world around him. That and study of biology showed him that a galaxy, ameba man and his thoughts are organized from the smallest unit into ever more complex systems and it’s all interconnected. From this crucible arose his additive process of sculpting. From simple blocks to ever more complex shapes and forms he creates unique sculpture shaped by his ever expending life experience and understanding of the universe we help to create.

Earning a living allowed him limited time to work his art; never the less he has built a large body of work that he exhibited and sold through his life. Now that he retired he has devoted all his time to his passion. People ask him how long it takes to make his sculptures. His favorite answer is “when you love what you do time does not exist”. Adam Sobas is an emerging artist with unique perspective on sculpture.
